Obsessions and Compulsions

Through years of work in therapy and 12 Step Recovery, I learned that my obsessive thinking and ruminations that preempt my compulsive behavior patterns are illusions and distortions of reality.

Today I am immensely grateful for the tools of CBT, talk therapy, the realization that I have the capacity to replace a distorted thought with an accurate one, the understanding that I can’t will obsessions away but can consciously choose to think of other things while they run in the background, the application of critical dissection of distorted thinking, prayer, Fellowship, spiritual reading, service to others, surrender, faith, and engaging in healthy behaviors..
