In my long, arduous journey of recovery and treatment, two things I have learned to value highly are my inner peace and my emotional sobriety.
While “restraint of tongue and pen” has served me well, as my old tendency was to let things go and to stuff my resentments until I exploded, assertiveness and the healthy expression of needs and feelings are essential to maintaining my inner peace.
Holding in one’s thoughts and feelings rather than expressing them in appropriate ways is an act of self-betrayal and a recipe for sabotaging one’s inner peace and the peace of those around you.
