The brain is an organ. So why have we attached so much stigma and shame to having an illness related to that organ?
When someone has heart, lung, kidney, or pancreatic illnesses, people pray for them, support them, help them, set up Go Fund Me accounts, love them, etc…
When someone has a mental illness, they are shamed and treated like a pariah. People fear us, despite the fact that we are far more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators. People leave millions of us roaming the streets or sitting behind bars, rotting away for lack of treatment or socialization. But society is happy. Out of sight out of mind.
1 in 4 Americans suffer from some form of mental illness, and 1 in 17 from a serious mental illness. Nearly everyone is impacted by this national crisis
We need to fix our severely broken mental health care system and start helping instead of shaming.
Or are we happy being passive-aggressive savages?
