Those of us with a mental illness, addiction, or emotional trauma often struggle-because of the symptoms of our affliction AND because navigating life when we are untreated, and sometimes when treated, is incredibly difficult.
Some of us struggle until we hit rock bottom and find recovery. Sadly, others hit rock bottom and wind up imprisoned, homeless, or dead. Yet even those who are imprisoned and homeless sometimes find recovery and relief.
Struggle isn’t failure. It is, based on my experience, an opportunity to learn and grow. Those of us who are fortunate enough to come out on the other side of our struggles, no matter how far down the scale we have gone, are afforded a great opportunity to help those who are still suffering by sharing our experience, strength, and hope.
What greater success could one have?
